Milagres Church (Mangalore)


The Milagres Church 
Portuguese: Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres
English: Church of Our Lady of Miracles

Is one of the historic Roman Catholic Church situated in the Hampankatta locality of Mangalore. The church was built in 1680 by Bishop Thomas de Castro, a Theatine from Divar, Goa.

The original structure was constructed at the site of the present-day cemetery. It is one of the oldest churches in Dakshina Kannada.

The Old Milagres Church was demolished by the ruler Tipu Sultan along with the other churches of Mangaluru.

Later after Tipu Died the Church was reconstructed by captive Mangalorean Catholic who returned back. one among them was was a baker Lawrence Bello, who built a chapel to replace the demolished church, on the site of the present church at a cost of Rs. 400. 

The present church is build in the year 1911 after the 1811 church completed its 100 years when  the facade of the church collapsed.

The special statues at the church are of Mother Mary, Guardian angel and other angels. Which were recently renovated for the 100 years of celebration in 2011 and changed to silver grey color.

The Archangel Michael, sword in hand, tramples on a dragon/serpent representing Satan.

St Paul stands with his sword that reminds us that he turned from persecuting Christians to protecting them.

The church has lot of history behind of construction and the number of priest served the parish.
